How to Start SEO: A Practical Guide for Business Owners
Most businesses starting SEO make the same mistake: they jump straight to writing blog posts before fixing the technical and structural problems holding their site back. This guide walks through the order that actually works.
1. Make sure Google can actually see your site
Before anything else, confirm your site is indexed. Search "site:yourdomain.com" in Google — if pages are missing, there's a crawlability problem to fix before content or links will matter. Setting up Google Search Console (see our dedicated guide) is the first real step, not an optional extra.
2. Understand what your customers actually search for
Keyword research isn't about guessing — it's about finding the exact phrases real customers type into Google, and how much competition exists for each. A business page optimised for "digital marketing" nationally will lose to established players; the same business optimised for "digital marketing agency in Leeds" has a realistic path to page one.
3. Fix on-page basics before creating new content
Every existing page should have a unique title tag, a clear H1, and a meta description that gives someone a reason to click. This is unglamorous work, but it's usually the fastest ranking improvement available — faster than writing ten new blog posts.
4. Build authority deliberately, not accidentally
Backlinks and mentions from relevant, reputable sites remain one of the strongest ranking signals. This doesn't mean buying links — it means genuine outreach, partnerships, and content worth linking to.
